Sponsor a Scholar

PHI strives to provide opportunities for activists who have serious career plans, passion, and requisite training to work in the field of anti-trafficking, yet lack the financial resources to participate in our annual summer study program. Therefore, we attempt to offer at least one full scholarship each year for a deserving candidate! Your contribution to this HOPE Scholar Fund would be tremendously appreciated! This year's scholar candidate is the vivacious, dedicated advocate, Michelle Mullany.

Meet Michelle, contribute to her scholarship, and help trafficked persons!

THANK YOU to all your contributed! Michelle will be heading to Thailand and Cambodia very soon!

Michelle Mullany is committed to social change and the future of human trafficking leadership. While these goals are not uncommon among social workers, Michelle's method of realizing them is rather unique. Michelle's focus is as a clinical social worker with victims of crime and trauma survivors. Michelle has strengthened the field of social work by incorporating the field of human trafficking into social work practice.

Michelle is a graduate of George Mason University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. While attending GMU, Michelle received awards for her contributions to the field of social justice and leadership within the field of social work. During her undergraduate studies, Michelle co-sponsored a conference addressing the need for comprehensive services for trafficking victims, the first of it's kind in the region.

Through her education and contact with various service providers, Michelle began to see the need for social workers to be writing human trafficking policies and initiatives. Determined to continue work in the field of human trafficking, Michelle attended the University of Pennsylvania, one of the only schools of social work with a renowned international focus. Michelle will receive a Master of Social work degree with highest honors in May.

She finds that when she talks with audiences in social work and other professional settings they are often drawn to have a better understanding of the problem. Through this type of advocacy and education Michelle hopes to raise awareness and encourage a large scale social response to the problem of human trafficking. In an effort to provide the most current information in the field and understand in greater depth the challenges trafficked persons face, Michelle hopes to attend PHI's annual summer study program in Thailand. The trip will provide Michelle with a hand's on perspective of the problem, and an opportunity to learn from service providers working in shelters in Thailand and Cambodia.

Michelle is a native of Philadelphia, and has traveled extensively throughout the world, including residences in the United Kingdom and Japan. She is a former United States Marine and the mother of Steven, a junior advocate for social change.
