Prevent Human Trafficking and The Pattaya Home for Street Children
Prevent Human Trafficking is raising $200,000 to build a new orphanage for the street children of Pattaya, Thailand.
Background
There are thousands of homeless children living on the streets and under bridges in Pattaya. Many of which suffer from family dysfunctions such as family breakdown, abandonment, violence, and orphanage. They have no education, little food and no protection of any kind. They are unfortunately, perfect targets for exploitation.
Life On the Streets
Without the safety and shelter of the Pattaya Home for Streetchildren, life on the streets can be tough. The children often spend their time sniffing glue as an escape from their suffering or stealing so they can eat. Sniffing glue is very dangerous and often leaves these young children listless and incoherent. Even worse, they are vulnerable to sexual predators and prostitution. These street children often sleep in public places which can lead to fighting and violence.
Documentary
Looking for Nook is a documentary film about a street child that was found by the director of the Pattaya Home. Nook's story is unfortunately typical of many of these children, some as young as five or six years of age. Some are sexually exploited and suffer from HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases.
The Orphanage
The Pattay Home for Street Children is run by Khun-Ja, and currently houses up to 30 children. It costs Ja about $400.00 per year to feed, clothe, house and educate one child as well as give HIV medicine to those who need treatment. For $9,000 ALL of his children can be taken care of for one full year. On a recent site visit, we noticed that the children’s sheets were filthy and they had worn out their clothing. With funding, Ja will feel secure that he can care for these children for another year and rescue more children who are at risk of exploitation.
The Future
Currently, the children live in temporary housing donated by a school. Ja would like to build a new orphanage to accomodate more children, in a safer neighboorhood. The cost of building the new home is approximately $200,000. He has secured a plot of land, and is working with local builders to begin the project so that as soon as funds become available.
Ja’s life has been threatened many times by pimps and pedophiles because he takes their “business” off the streets. Christina Arnold, Executive Director of Project Hope International and I gave Ja $200.00 and he was able to set up a computer and internet system so that he didn’t have to bike 45 minutes away to use the internet. As a result, he can now communicate with us, and update us on projects he is working on, in addition to maintaining contact with potential funders who, like I do –believe in his work.
